The Gordon
Russell story
Russell story
Gordon Russell founded his company in 1923 and became synonymous with quality and inspired design furniture
The Early Years
Gordon Russell (1892 - 1980) was born in London. As a teenager he was inspired by the arts and crafts movement when he moved with his family to Broadway in the Cotswolds in 1904.
After serving as an Officer in the First World War, he went on to establish himself as one of the most successful British furniture designers of the twentieth century. The company bearing his name came to be highly respected and regarded as a symbol of great quality.

The Legacy
Gordon was the first chairman of what is now called the Design Council in 1947 and played an instrumental part in the design and manufacture of post war furniture that helped the country re-build after the second world war. He was awarded a knighthood in 1955 for services to design and wrote a number of books on furniture.
His story and the influence that he and his business had is beautifully captured by the Gordon Russell Design Museum in Broadway.
Since coming under the ownership of William Hands, another established manufacturer of fine furniture founded in 1906, we are proud to continue Gordon's legacy, with our well crafted furniture design that is perfect for any home.

Since 2008 William Hands have used the Gordon Russell name to support, educate and inspire new creatives to develop and work in our industry.
The Gordon Russell Prize
Rycotewood Furniture Centre
William Hands created The Gordon Russell Prize in recognition of outstanding work by final year students at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxford.
By working on a specific brief during the final year of their degree, we ask them to design and make furniture influenced by the spirit of Gordon Russell.
We offer guidance and support to provide the students with as much real-world experience as possible.
